The University of Leicester have a number of laboratories which kill 101 animals every day, 36,773 every year, in a variety of experiments using rodents, chicks and xenopus. UoL are also involved in research using beagles and primates. We also have documentation proving that animals are flown thousands of miles from UC Davis in California, destined to die inside Leicester's laboratories. Of the experiments conducted 62.2% are of a medium pain level, according to the Home Office. Some of these were understated by the researchers involved. There is also a GM breeding unit, supplying different strains of animals to laboratories, operating from the main campus. We can also prove that animals undergoing experimentation, some of which were pregnant, into bacteria and exposure are transferred to the University of Nottingham and flown to the USA. In other experiments, pregnant animals are used and killed. Others have animals housed in complete isolation, sometimes with restricted access to water and food to make them complete tasks and 'training'. It was also stated by the researchers that some of the "Animals will appear depressed." At NAVA, we beleive that no vivisection in acceptable, however with 101 animals being killed every day inside the University of Leicester, not even including their contracted out experiments, there is no reason for a new animal laboratory to be built to bring these figures, amongst the highest in the country, up any further.
